October begins Book-it calendars!  Each month until March the children will bring home a calendar that they can color a symbol each day they read 10-20 minutes with you or by themselves.  The purpose is to encourage reading daily!  On November 1 send the calendar back and your child gets a coupon from Pizza Hut for a personal pizza and will get a November calendar to start over!  Those children that participate will receive a prize in March—If they participate all the months from October to March they receive 2 prizes!  Let’s encourage reading!!!!

Coins for Kids is going on the month of October.  We will collect change daily as the children choose to bring in change.  The money goes to a Literacy Project for children.

READING:
This week begins our study of one letter a week.  We are learning to write the letters Mm—we are also learning the sounds m makes.
Our story is --What about Bear?  It is about friends being kind to each other and including everyone.  We will be working on listening and comprehending what we are  reading.
Our Beanie Babies this week are Questioning Owl—r4eminds us to ask ourselves questions about a story as we read and Spinner Spider helps us try to remember to make a connection while we are reading a story.

Our new sight word is the.  We sing to the tune of 3 Blind mice….
T-h-e, T-h-e, I can spell the…t-h-e!

Then children have been introduced to an app on their Ipads called Teach Your Monster to Read!  You can get it too!  I’m attaching information and their login cards!  3 children have already moved up and received a letter from their ‘monster’!  They LOVE this app!  It teaches letters, sounds, words and sentences that they can read!

WRITING:
We are trying to add more sounds to the pictures we are drawing in our journals.
As a group, we will be creating a small moment story about our Gingerbread man day.
In anticipation of Halloween we will be reading some stories by Mercer Mayer and making a class book.  The first will be There’s an Alligator under my Bed.

MATH
We are practicing counting.  We will learn some simple addition and subtraction games and do some graphing.

SCIENCE & SOCIAL STUDIES:
We are continuing our weather study.  We have practiced a fire drill and have discussed what we do in case of a tornado and a lock-down.
We have tagged and released 3 butterflies!

Please remember shoes for gym on Monday and Thursday!
Now that the weather is getting chilly it helps to have hat and mittens in their backpack!!
Remind children they should have no toys in their backpack!

Have a great week!
Melissa
