When reading we are working on characters, setting and plot.  Practice when you read at home.

WRITING:  We are finishing up on small moment stories and reading them to each other.  We write in journals every day to practice our craft at making sentences.

SCIENCE & SOCIAL STUDIES:
We have begun our study of maps.  The children will learn directions N, S, E, W!  I will take them out in the morning on a sunny day and we will talk about the sun rising in the east and the opposite direction is west.  If they are pointing east with their left hand and west with their right then they are facing south and north will be behind them.  Later in the week we will look at the sun in the afternoon—it will be in the south!

We will also be wrapping up our science with building bridges for Little Red Riding Hood to get over the river to Grandma’s house.  We also have a marble track to put together to work with at STEM night!

MATH:  We are working on adding and subtracting – the children will learn using number lines, ten frames, dominoes and writing out the number sentence.

This is the last month for Book-it calendars.  Send them in after spring break!

We will clean out lockers the last day before break!  Please take this time to wash coats, mittens, hats if you can!  Let’s be rid of these winter germs!  We sure have been hit hard this year!  Hope everyone has a restful break!
The children most likely will not need to wear boots after break!  Snow is almost gone (unless we get another storm! –I know ---SH!!!  I’m ready for winter to be done too, but there’s still a chance!!!)  They will however, need hats and mittens!  Chilly in the morning!

March 19-23

Spring break March 23-April 1:  Happy Easter!  Hope you all have a wonderful and safe break!  See all the kids April 2!

READING:
We are reading Ana goes to Washington D.C.  Mid-April our high school helper Kayla, goes to Washington D.C for her senior trip.  She will be sending me pictures of the sights she sees and we will compare to the book.  We learn about our national symbols through the book!
Sight words:  what & his

WRITING:
We have finished our last small moments and are now moving on to opinion letters.  We will read a few books that have opinions in it so they will understand and then we will practice a few class letters before they try one.
March journals come home this week!  I’m SO impressed with the progress we have made with reading and writing!  The children have certainly worked hard this year!!!!  After break I will begin reading folders.  They will be able to check out a book from my collection to borrow and bring home to read to you!  When they return it they may check out another book!  Details after break!

MATH:
What fun we have had with Math!!  We have been adding and subtracting!  They are enjoying learning about 3D shapes, they can skip count by 5’s and 10’s and we are working on 2’s!  2’s are very tricky!!!!

SCIENCE & SOCIAL STUDIES:
We are continuing our map skills journey!  We’ve checked out north, south, east and west!  Love listening to them use those words in their conversations!
We are also continuing to learn about our national symbols.

After break the children will be bringing home some very important books we have worked on so far this year!  These books are special for the children!  Not only did they work hard on them, but they have taught them many skills!  The first one is their ABC Sound Book!  There are directions inside the cover to help you understand how to read the book with your child!  First by saying the letter then the sound twice then reading the word!  Each picture has a flap covering a picture that starts with that sound .  I tried to find covers that would match the beginning sound as well!  These books were done at the beginning of the year in the first month of school!
Their handwriting books will come home also and you will see some huge changes in their writing!  We mix up the letters so it’s not in order, but you will still see growth in their handwriting!  The children have also noticed in the last month or so that they can now ready the sentences!

Their ABC dictionaries are coming too!  Each letter has 4 pictures they cut out and color, glue in and write the word!
I hope you enjoy reading these with your child when they arrive home!!!  I know many families are saving them with their scrapbooks that I will send home the last week of school!!!

Have a fantastic break!
