Week of April 25-29

Dear Families:

Made it back from Arizona.  Lots to do yet to get my parents settled, but we will make it!  I am gone today (Wednesday) as the U-haul is scheduled to arrive and will be unloaded at that time!

DATES TO REMEMBER:
Reminder that there is no Kindergarten again this Friday, April 29-- we have Kindergarten orientation again.

Please turn in your Muffins with Mom papers as soon as you can!  It will be held on May 13 or 20

READING:
We are on a review week of the past letters  Uu, Gg, Ww, Xx, Vv, Jj, Q, q (qu) and Zz
Our sight words for this week are also review:  for, have, they, of said, want, here me, this, what & him.

This week we are reading about the sky during the daytime and nighttime.    I took some pictures from the airplane to share with the children from above the clouds!

VOCABULARY:  distance, recognize
CATEGORY WORDS:  opposites

COMPREHENSION:  problem and solution.

WRITING:  Some of our journal entries are about spring.  We will be talking about informational writing and will try writing our own book and including information we know about spring.
MATH:  This week we will learn about estimating as well as continue to work on addition with in 10, reviewing our counting and shapes

STUDENT OF THE WEEK:  Jared
Jared likes to play on his tablet.  He loves his dog.  He loves to eat pizza and drink chocolate milk.  Jared’s favorite movie and book is Paw Patrol.  He wants to be a policeman and a fireman.

Week of April 18-22

April 22 and 29 NO school for Kindergarteners due to Kindergarten Round up.
May 16:  Delayed start
May 27:  Fun to Be Fit at 1:30 (notes going home with report cards)
May 30:  Memorial Day—NO school
June 2:  Kindergarten Spring program at 1:30
June 3:  Kindergarten trip to the Kettunen Center
June 4 (Saturday)  McBain PTO Bike-a-thon
June 10:  Track and field in the afternoon
June 15:  Last day of school

****Please send in a baby picture for our past/present/future project.  We are planning to do this project next week!

I will be gone from school on Monday, April 25 as I am flying my parents home from Arizona. I plan to be back in school on Tuesday baring any unforeseen difficulties!  Mrs. Sikkema will be here in my place!  The children all know her and love having her here!

READING:  We are reading Anna goes to Washington.  We will be learning about some of our countries national monuments, parks and symbols.

LETTERS:  Yy & Zz

SIGHT WORDS:  This, what & his

VOCABULARY: country, travel

CATEGORY WORDS:  ordinal numbers (1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc.)

COMPREHENSION:  sequence … After reading a story, have your child tell you what happened first, next, last.

MATH:  We will be using a pan balance to learn about leveling to determine if the objects weigh more, less or equal.  We will also be taking a survey and using the data to be represented in a graph.  

We also continue to count by 1’s, 2’s, 5’s and 10’s as well as working with 3D shapes.

STUDENT OF THE WEEK:

Kassi—Kassi likes to play with dolls, likes to work with Daddy on his truck and watch football!  Her favorite foods are cereal, pizza, chicken nuggets and red beans & rice.  Kassi’s favorite movie and book is Frozen.  Kassi wants to become a firefighter.  She wants to see a dolphin.

CONFERENCES:
Report cards are coming home.  I have conferences scheduled for some of you on Thursday, if you did not receive a conference note and would still like to meet regarding your child’s report card or behavior please give me a call or send me an email and we can get a meeting scheduled.  If you did receive a conference note, please return to confirm your appointment.  If you cannot make your appointment I will try to reschedule.  With the report cards I will be sending home the children’s September and March journals.  It’s always fun to see where they were in the fall and compare where they are now.   Remember I have scrapbooks coming home in June as well in case you want to save these for their kindergarten scrapbook!

STUDENT OF THE WEEK:  Preston—Preston likes to go fishing, collect cars, ride his bike and go for walks.  He likes to eat mac and cheese.  His favorite movie is Transformers.  Preston’s favorite book is Tough Tractors.

READING:
This week we are talking about going places.  Children will learn about different ways to get places today as well as in the past!
COMPREHENSION:  character, setting, plot.  Talk about these when reading a story to your child.
LETTERS:  Jj, Qq
SIGHT WORDS:  here, this, me
VOCABULARY:  transportation, vehicle
CATEGORY WORDS:  vehicles

WRITING:
We will write about spring weather and things we did on our spring break.

SCIENCE/SOCIAL STUDIES:  Talk about traveling and maps/globes.

MATH:  Review 3D shapes, continue work on adding and subtracting, and building/writing teen numbers.

This is the last week for March Pizza Hut Book-It calendars!  Get them in as soon as possible!  Friday is it!
I have put together some prizes for reading month—everyone gets something but those that brought in all the Book-It calendars will get an extra surprise!  Thanks for participating in the program!
