STUDENT OF THE WEEK:  Phoebe
Phoebe loves animals and to color.  She said she’s wild! J  She likes Goldfish, peanut butter, and hot dogs.  Phoebe wants to learn to read and to make more friends.  Her favorite movie is Mickey and Minnie Mouse.

BABY PICTURES:  I still need more baby pictures!!!
In a few weeks we will be doing a paper on past, present, future.  I will need a baby (preferable infant age) picture of your child.  You can email it to me or send it in—if you send it in I will copy and get it back to you as soon as I can.  The children will be gluing this copy of their picture to their paper and writing what they could do at that age.  I have current pictures they will glue under present and they will write about what they can do now!  Then they will draw what they will look like and will write about what they will do in the future.  It’s a fun project!

Keep saving those caps!  We’re counting as they come in!!  One more week!!

BOOK BAGS:  They all have their book bags!  We will do Monday & Friday for returns and new shopping day!  PLEASE send their bags Friday and we will shop for new books for the weekend!  They are SO excited!!!!  Then send them back on Monday and we will shop for books they read until Friday!  Repeat reading builds their skills! 

WRITING:  We write daily in our journals.
We are learning about informational writing and will be writing our own information book.
READING: 
This week we are readying Bread comes to life.  We are learning how to use natural resources to create new things.  They are reading about how wheat is planted, cut, ground and made in to bread.  Friday we will be making our own white bread.  I’ve included the recipe we will use!  I got the recipe years ago from our neighbor I used to work with at her catering business!  It makes 2 loaves!
PHONICS: long o words and s blends (sl, sp, st, squ, sk, sw, sc, sn, sm)
VOCABULARY:  natural resources, create
CATEGORY WORDS:  Foods made from grain

SCIENCE & SOCIAL STUDIES:
Earth day was April 22.  We have read stories about earth day and recycling,  We have work sheets we’ll work on and we started a recycling of white paper in our classroom.

MATH:  This week we are working on subtracting, building numbers using base ten blocks and counting from different starting points.

CHARACTER WORD:  Honesty

STUDENT OF THE WEEK:  William
William likes to play with toys and play soccer.  His friend is Connor.  He likes Mashed potatoes,  William’s favorite movie is How To Train Your Dragon 2,  His goals are to be a police officer and he wants to learn everything!!

READING:
We are reading a story called Hen Hears Gossip.  We are learning about being a good citizen.  We are also reading books about taking care of our earth as April 22 is Earth Day!
VOCABULARY:  citizen & respect
SIGHT WORDS:  play, has & all
CATEGORY WORDS: farm animals
PHONICS:  we are learning long i-e (as in like, fine) and ch words
WRITING:
We finished up writing our letters to preschoolers.  I will be leaving the letters out at orientation.  I made a copy and will put theirs in their scrapbooks.  They did a great job!
We will be starting a new unit in writing—informational writing.  We will write about things we know about.
We continue to write every day in our journals! 

SCIENCE & SOCIAL STUDIES:  We completed the sun unit in our science journals.  We will now start a unit on life cycles.  When it is warmer in May I will have Painted Lady butterflies!! 

MATH:
We are working on 3D shapes.  We will be making shapes using toothpicks and marshmallows.  We also are continuing to work on adding and subtracting!  They are really in to it!  Hope you enjoyed working with them and their bead bracelets!

Week of April 2-6
DATES:

Well, I was hoping we were finished with snow pants and boots, but Mother nature has different plans!  Please continue to send all outdoor wear until further notice!

Please make sure your child has an extra set of clothing in their locker.  I will try and write a note if you need to send one in!

Send in March Book-it calendars.  This is the last month for it!

READING:
We will be reading stories about day and nighttime skies.  Our big book this week is Bringing Down the Moon.
VOCABULARY:  distance & recognize
CATEGORY WORDS:  opposites
SIGHT WORDS:  this & that and review
We will be reviewing u,g,w,x,v,j,qu & z.  We are finished with the alphabet now!  This week we will edit our handwriting books and our dictionary and they will be coming home along with the ABC sound book they made at the beginning of the year.  Hang on to these books so the children have them to review over the summer!  Good summer homework so skills aren’t lost over the summer break!

WRITING:  We write in our journals every day!  We will also begin writing opinion letters.

SCIENCE & SOCIAL STUDIES:  We are finishing up weather and beginning our sun and how important it is to us and the earth.  We are also working on our map books and bringing them home when finished!  The children have learned how to look for the sun in the morning to determine the east, mid-afternoon for the south and later afternoon closer to dinner time for the west!  They know the sun rises in the east and sets in the west and we don’t have sun in the north sky!
