Week of May 21-25, 2018
DATES:
May 22—Field trip to the Kettunen Center—All day –Leaving at 8:30 returning 2:30
May 24 LAST book order due!
May 25  Fun to be fit @ 1:30 P.M.  Meet us at the track
May 28--NO SCHOOL—Memorial Day
May 29—Kindergarten concert @1:30 P.M. in the auditorium.
June 1st—Track and Field (K-2—afternoon)
June 4-- dismissal at 11:35
June 5—LAST DAY for 2017-2018—dismissal at 11:35

Field trip is Tuesday May 22—we leave the school BY 8:30.  Please have children dressed for the weather!  They all must wear tennis shoes—no flip flops.  We do a lot of field and forest walking all day!
We will be taking our backpacks so please have an extra set of clothes in a bag in the bottom of their back pack!  Have sunscreen on them in the morning if needed!  We will return to school about 2:30.  They can bring a small water bottle—make sure it seals and their name is on it!
PLEASE check your child over for ticks once they get home!  We hope to NOT have any, but please be safe and check all areas!

Fun to be fit is the 25th—if you are coming, I will have a sign out sheet for you to sign your child out if you choose to take them home early.

STUDENT OF THE WEEK:  Josselyn
Josselyn loves Cheetahs, the color purple and making jewelry.  Her favorite food is cake with cherries.  Josselyn’s favorite movie is Moana.  Her goals are to ride a horse and go to college

Reading this week (Wednesday-Friday) we will be finishing the rest of our station work that we started mid-week last week.

Math:  We will be introducing time to the hour and practicing addition & subtraction.

PLEASE send in all reading folders.  I will be filling them with summer things to do and sending home soon!
Children have access to RAZ kids all summer!

Thank you all for the baby pictures!  If you sent one in I have returned them to your child’s folder!

STUDENT OF THE WEEK:  Theo
Theo likes green, Superman and Praying Mantis!  He likes to eat oranges, pizza, mac and cheese.  His favorite movie is Bat Man.  His goals are to be a mechanic and play basketball.

BABY PICTURES:  We will be doing our past, present and future work next week!  If I don’t have your child’s baby picture, please send it in or email me! mthompson@mcbain.org

FIELD TRIP:  Everyone has the field trip information—it went home on a gold paper.  I need the permission and $5 back as soon as possible!

READING:
This week our book is about sorting things in to different ‘families’ or groups!  We will practice sorting things by color, size, shape, kind, weight, texture, etc. 

SIGHT WORDS:  come & does
VOCABULARY:  sorting & similar
CATEGORY WORDS:  opposites
PHONICS:  long /e/ and digraph /th/

WRITING:  We are working on informational writing and also our daily journals!

SCIENCE & SOCIAL STUDIES: 
We will read some spring stories as well as life cycles of butterflies, frogs, etc. 
Our CHARACTER TRAIT is RESPONSIBILITY.
Math:  We will be practicing putting numbers in order from smallest to biggest. 
We will also be talking about rules, patterns and functions as well as adding and subtracting.

STUDENT OF THE WEEK:  Mia
Mia loves waterparks, horses and playing with her friends!  She likes to eat pancakes, milk, bananas and pizza.  Her favorite movie is Moana.  Her goals are to have a horse someday and to milk a cow!

BABY PICTURES:  I still need more baby pictures!!!
In a few weeks we will be doing a paper on past, present, future.  I will need a baby (preferable infant age) picture of your child.  You can email it to me or send it in—if you send it in I will copy and get it back to you as soon as I can.  The children will be gluing this copy of their picture to their paper and writing what they could do at that age.  I have current pictures they will glue under present and they will write about what they can do now!  Then they will draw what they will look like and will write about what they will do in the future.  It’s a fun project!
****PLEASE send in or email baby pictures!  I’d like to do it next week!

We are finished with the cap collection!  Thank you for helping us count on!!!

READING:
Our Story, What’s the big idea, Molly? Is about how we work together to solve a problem.  The children enjoyed predicting what was going to happen and how they were going to solve the problem!
VOCABULARY:  decide, opinion
CATEGORY WORDS:  question words
SIGHT WORDS:  who & good
PHONICS:  long u & /wh/

WRITING:  We write daily in our journals.  Every day I see more and more writing skills coming through!!  The children are really trying to put the letters and sounds together to make words and they are using a lot of their sight words!!!
The book bags are helping too!  I have a number of students that are wanting to read more!  Keep it up!!!  The more they read the better it gets!!!  PLEASE encourage daily reading at home!  It’s paying off!!!
We are learning about informational writing and will be writing our own information book.

SCIENCE & SOCIAL STUDIES:  We are working on life cycles.  I will be ordering Painted Lady Butterflies and we will watch the cycle!

CHARACTER TRAIT: responsibility
This is a trait the children have really accomplished this year!  This is a wonderful group of kids that like to be at school!  They take care of their own things!  They get themselves in line for the bus and are respectful no matter where we walk to!    I am SO proud of them!!!  Good job!!! 

MATH:
We are practicing counting, counting on from a given number, counting by 5 & 10, and we will work on addition and subtraction! 


Our field trip to the Kettunen center information will be coming out soon.  I just wanted to give you heads up—it is May 22.  We leave usually by 830 and return by about 230.  We are outside most of the day and we are digging in the woods, swamp, etc.!  It is a messy and fun day!  I understand it’s not for everyone.  I wanted you to know that it is a hands on trip!  The adults do help with all the activities!  The cost for the trip and lunch for the kids is $5.  Adults will be free.  Lunch is hotdogs, chips, drink, cookie, fruit.
