Week of November 26-30, 2018


DATES:
Dec. 6. Kindergarten Christmas concert 6:00—Children to arrive at 5:45 and brought to the Multi Use room

Dec 20 ½ day & Christmas party
Dec 21  ½ day, Sing along, PJ day

READING:
We are reading Clang! Clang!  Beep! Beep! Listen to the city.
It’s about noises we hear in our community.

Vocabulary:  listen & volume
Category words:  sound words
Sight words:  and & but
Letter: Nn. 

I am sending home the entire sight word list. Some children have asked! 
Please practice sight words daily!

WRITING:
We will finish up our November journals and they go home Friday!
Read through them with your child! 
We visited the butterfly garden and will be writing about what we saw in the fall.

MATH:
We are working on numbers, counting and will learn a new game called Monster Squeeze.  This game involves guessing a mystery number on the number line. 
We will look at shapes and be discussing their attributes (shape, size, thickness and color)

The children have made a countdown to Christmas chain—the last one being yellow for Christmas Day.  They made a green & red pattern for days 1-24.

SCIENCE & SOCIAL STUDIES:
We finished up wants and needs and will be going back to motion.  We will be investigating gravity.

Our Christmas party is scheduled for December 20 in the morning as it is a half day.  Girls will bring a gift for a girl and boys a boy gift (between $3-$5). Please label the tag TO: a (girl or boy) FROM:  have your child write his/her name.  Please don’t specify a specific child on the tag.  We will play a game to see who gets what gift!

Thank you to everyone that sent in donations or helped with our stone soup celebration last week!  It was a huge success!  The children enjoyed all the activities and making and eating the food!!!

Leah is always doing her best and also helps her friends! 
Leah likes spaghetti and the color pink.  She likes to make a fox using
Leaves.  Leah has one pet named Tess.  Her goal this school year is to learn how to write.  Leah wants to be a farmer when she grows up.  Her favorite book is Chicka Chicka Boom Boom!

Please keep sending shoes to school—or if it works better they can leave their shoes here.  The office has asked that children wear their snow gear to school to they can go directly to recess when they arrive at school.

The PTO is selling raffle tickets for a Side-by-side to raise money for the Elementary.  Tickets are $20 each or 3/$50.  Let me know if you would like tickets or stop in the office!

Winter!  Well --looks like it’s here!  Please remember to send children to school with their snow gear on as they put their backpack in their locker and head outside for first recess.  It’s a good idea to have 2 pair of gloves/mittens from now on!  We try to put them on the heater between recesses to dry—but it doesn’t always work.
Please check backpacks nightly for wet winter clothing!
PLEASE remember shoes!!!!!!!
I have asked the children to practice getting in and out of their snow gear as fast as they can!  The order to get ready is –snow pants, boots, coat, hat and mittens last so they can zip!  The first day we had snow they did well!!  Keep it up!!!!

READING:  How do Dinosaurs go to school?  We will look in to rules at home, school and other places we go.

Beanie Baby reading strategy:  
Chunky Monkey:  Chunky helps us read and write by using chunks or word families to write or read words we know.  (-it, -in, -ip, -ig)

WRITING:
We will write daily in our November journals.
We will start a new writing adventure—list, observe and label.  We hope to get a walk to the butterfly garden without snow to see what it looks like in the fall!  We will write an informational class book on fall. 

MATH:
We are learning to write numbers.  We will also be learning how to represent different numbers (using fingers, ten  or five frames, tally marks, dots, etc.). We are learning to put numbers in order from smallest to largest using cards.

SCIENCE & SOCIAL STUDIES:
The next 2 weeks we will focus on Stone Soup and Thanksgiving.  We will be looking at wants and needs.  We will read Thanksgiving/pilgrim books and talk about wants and needs then and now. 

We will also  be watching Eddie Eagle gun safety and talking about how to stay safe with the opening of deer hunting coming.  Eddie Eagle teacher the children to
STOP!  DON’T TOUCH!  LEAVE THE AREA!  TELL AN ADULT!  if they  should find a gun !

STONE SOUP:
The story of Stone soup is everyone in the community brought an item to make the soup they could all share
Our class is bringing 1 –just one, big carrot—we will trade our 21 carrots for an onion, cabbage, broth, potatoes, barley, etc., to make our soup for next Wednesday.  Please send in ONE carrot by Friday as we trade on Monday.

Christmas heads up:  For our Christmas party the children do a gift exchange—boys get a boy gift and girls get a girl gift.   In the past we have done $3-$5—just thought I’d toss it out as I know many shop the Friday after Thanksgiving.  I’ll have more Christmas details  after Thanksgiving.

Now that we have learned some consonants and a vowel the children should be able to sound out simple CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words---
Pam, Sam, Tam, map, sap, tap, lap, pat, etc.

Beanie Baby reading strategy:  
Pop, the Weasel:  sight words should POP out as we read them!
Iggy the Inferring Iguana—tells us to make predictions and inferences as we read stories, adjusting and validating as we read.

WRITING:
We will begin our November journals.
We will start a new writing adventure—list, observe and label.  We hope to get a walk to the butterfly garden with out snow to see what it looks like in the fall!  We will write an informational class book on fall.

MATH:
We will investigate longer and shorter. 
We are practicing positional words using an obstacle course in gym class.  We are practicing writing numbers 0-10 as well as counting to 30.

SCIENCE & SOCIAL STUDIES:
This week we will finish up on motion.
