Week of February 20-23

February 23:  Dentist visit
MARCH:  Reading month—STEM theme
March 1:  Reading month kick off:  Kaboomistry at 1:15 in the auditorium
March 2:  Career day, dress up as your favorite career or profession

STUDENT OF THE WEEK:
Zimmie
Zimmie’s favorite color is purple. She has two cats, Lilli and Pablo.  Zimmie loves stickers!  Zimmie likes to eat cookies and raspberries.  Zimmie’s goals are football and basketball.  Her favorite movie is Trolls.

READING:
We are reading a story called Zoo Borns.  It is about baby animals.  The children will be learning to use words to describe how they are the same and different.
VOCABULARY:  appearance & behavior
CATEGORY WORDS:  animal parts
SIGHT WORDS:  for & have
LETTER:  Uu

WRITING:
We will continue to work on our small moment story as well as write in our journals daily.

MATH:
We are working on 3D shapes.  They learned that an ellipsoid is like an egg, a rectangular prism is the shape of our refrigerators.  Have they asked you if you have an ellipsoid in your rectangular prism?  J   We will also be learning how to do addition, compare lengths and build teen numbers.

SCIENCE/SOCIAL STUDIES:
We are learning how to eat good food and take good care of our teeth by brushing and flossing at least two times a day!

READING MONTH is March.  We will be doing activities around fairy tales and Enchanting Engineering.  You will be getting a handout with all the activities listed for the month!  Next Thursday the children can bring in a small stuffed animal to keep in their book box for the month of March.  We will take time and read with our stuffed animal.  Also if you have safety goggles and keep in their book box or you are able to purchase a pair from the school for $1.  We will wear our safety goggles like scientists do while we read!

STUDENT OF THE WEEK:
Kenzie
Kenzie is a lefty.  She likes to run and can ride a 2 wheeled bike!  She likes to eat mac and cheese, steak, and ice cream with chocolate on top.  Kenzie’s favorite movie is Moana.  Her goals are to go to Florida and also to be a hair stylist. 

READING:
Our big book, Waiting out the Storm will help us learn about weather.
Letters:  Reviewing
Sight words:  Reviewing
Vocabulary words:  predict, weather
Category words: weather words

WRITING:
We are learning about small moments that have happened in our lives and we will be writing about one.  As a class we will write about when we made Stone Soup.

MATH:
We are doing a pet graph and learning about information we can gain from using a graph.  We will be doing a 3D shape museum.  If you have something at home your child can bring in, put his/her name on it and we will return it when we are finished.

SCIENCE/SOCIAL STUDIES
We have been talking about winter weather and activities.  This week we will learn a bit about Presidents Lincoln and Washington.
We will learn about our heart and the importance of eating healthy and exercise. 
Our character traits for this month are integrity and self-control.  When children are seen using these characters they receive a token for their token necklace!

Parent/Teacher conferences are next Thursday.  Letters are going home with this newsletter.  If you didn’t receive one and would like a conference, please give me a call or write me a note and I will try to schedule one.  We only have time between 4-7 –unfortunately it’s not enough time for all 21.  We can even talk on the phone!

Valentine’s:
Please send in Valentines prior to Wednesday if possible. 
Here is the Valentine information from past newsletter.  Please note—I forgot to add our high school helper to the list—Kayla comes the last hour of the day and helps!!!
VALENTINE”S DAY:
Our Valentine party will be after  lunch.  We will keep it simple.  The children will pass out their own Valentine’s.  We will watch a Valentine movie and enjoy a snack.  Following is a list of children’s names and any adults that help in the room.  Try to have your child write his/her name on the cards   They all do a fantastic job writing names!  Try to do a few cards each day to make it easier!  We make Valentine bags in the classroom.

READING:
We ready about Rain and your senses. Smelling, seeing, hearing, touching and tasting it!

Letters:  Kk and ending ck
Sight words:  she & was

We have now learning 30 sight words!  The children have been encouraged to practice all 30 every night!

Writing:
We are listening to small moment stories.  The children are thinking about small moments in their own lives they will write about the end of next week.

MATH:
We will be measuring and using the pan balance.  Feb 7 we will celebrate 100’s day by making a hat with 10 strips of paper.  On each strip the children will make 10 things.  They have learned that 10 sets of 10 makes 100.  We will count by 1’s, 5’s and 10’s to 100 using Jack Hartman videos.  The children love to count with his songs!  You can find him on Youtube! 

SCIENCE/SOCIAL STUDIES:
We continue to talk about winter weather and activities.

Technology:

The children have learned to use a QR code to take them to a story.  The children are using RAZ kids, they can read at home as well.

READING:
We are finishing up Ff & Rr and will begin Bb & Ll, new sight words are is & little.
Our big book this week is Mamma, Is it summer yet?  The theme is around the different seasons we experience. 

WRITING:
The children are finishing up on writing pattern books.  We will begin reading various stories to demonstrate what a small moment story is.  The children will begin to think of an event in their life they can write about.

MATH:
3D shapes
Addition and equal symbols, work on writing numbers

SCIENCE & SOCIAL STUDIES
We are focusing on winter and force/motion
Character trait:  Integrity, self control

VALENTINE”S DAY:
Our Valentine party will be after gym and recess so we will not have a lot of time.  We will keep it simple.  The children will pass out their own Valentine’s.  We will watch a Valentine movie and enjoy a snack after recess.  If you signed up at fall conferences to bring a treat I have included a reminder at the end of this newsletter.  We had left over raspberry sherbet from our Christmas party and they asked if we could have it again!!  So our drink will be 7 UP and raspberry sherbet!
